  Group of advanced carbon materials and devices(Group 709) is affiliated to ICCCAS. Facing the significant national needs of energy revolution and new material industry, Group 709 carries out the R&D of advanced carbon materials and electrochemical energy storage devices,  upholds the concept of "raw materials-materials-devices-applications", creates an innovation system of "application basic research-technology development-industrialization", solves common key scientific problems, masters a complete set of core technologies, cooperates with industry, university and research to promote the transfer of achievements, and promotes the high-quality development of relevant industries.

  Group 709 is a dynamic, multidisciplinary and young team. It has a staff of 53, including 13 scientific backbone, 19 engineers and 21 graduate students. It has 300m2 laboratory and 2500m2 pilot line respectively in Taonan and Xiaodian Park of ICC. It has built a perfect R & D platform for advanced carbon materials and electrochemical energy storage devices, with a total value of fixed assets of more than 25 million yuan, and has the whole chain innovation ability from laboratory, pilot production to industrialization.

  Group 709 has undertaken more than 30 national, Shanxi and domestic and foreign enterprise projects, with a total amount of funds in place of more than 90 million yuan. It has published more than 160 papers and 1 English monograph, authorized 22 patents, and presided over the formulation of 8 international and national standards. The team has successively won the first prize of Natural Science in Shanxi Province, the first prize of innovation achievements of China's industry university research cooperation, the second prize of technological invention of China Chemical Society, and the collective honor of Shanxi Youth May 4th award in 2020. Dr. Chen chengmeng, the project leader, was selected as the "35 scientific and technological innovators under the age of 35" in 2017 MIT science and Technology Review China. In 2019, he was supported by the National Natural Science excellent youth fund. He also won Hou Debang chemical science and Technology Youth Award, the youth granulation Award of China granulation society, the "Star" excellent talent of Beijing Branch of Chinese Academy of Sciences and other honors.

  In recent five years, the research group has been mainly engaged in the R&D of advanced carbon materials and devices, that is, to carry out basic research and technology development of new carbon materials for the needs of supercapacitor and lithium-ion battery industry. Based on the collaborative research of industry, University, research and application, and in cooperation with Jinneng group, Meijin energy and other enterprises, it has broken through the bottleneck technical problems, designed and developed a full set of production processes and process equipment, successively built ton graphene and ten ton capacitor carbon pilot demonstration lines, and realized the stable supply of batches of 100 kg materials. Among them, the pilot technology of graphene has passed the achievement appraisal organized by the Department of science and technology of Shanxi Province and reached the international advanced level. The products have been popularized and applied to more than 100 enterprises and research institutions at home and abroad, and achieved important achievements in the fields of thermal management, solid propellant and supercapacitor. The pilot technology of supercapacitor carbon has passed the evaluation of scientific and technological achievements of China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, and has reached the international advanced level as a whole. The products have passed the application verification of domestic super capacitor leading enterprises such as CRRC new energy in Ningbo, formed the technical index system and application solution of domestic carbon, and improved the independent guarantee ability of key materials of supercapacitor. Based on the above materials, a new generation of high-performance supercapacitors has been designed and developed, and application demonstrations such as solar spike lamps and electric tour buses have been formed, creating the technological innovation chain of "raw material material device use". Group 709 took the lead in formulating a number of international, national and industrial standards in the field of graphene, porous carbon and supercapacitor, which has built a quality and technical foundation for the healthy and orderly development of related industries. The above work has contributed to leading the high-quality development of China's carbon industry and serving the transformation and upgrading of Shanxi's local economy.
